Male Hair transplantation Surgery
Male Hair transplantation is an aesthetic procedure to restore hair to thinning or bald areas of the scalp in men — and, if desired, the beard, eyebrows, and even chest- using the patient’s own hair. Hair is taken from the back and/or sides of the scalp to serve as donor’s hair.
In the occasional patient, the donor’s hairs come from the beard in a technique called body hair transplantation. This hair is genetically not susceptible to the male hair loss process or baldness (male pattern), therefore once transplanted will continue to grow for a lifetime.
Hair transplant surgery is the only way to permanently restore hair to bald or thinning areas in men. The hope is that the research that we and some of our colleagues are doing with stem cells and other innovative therapies will provide a more permanent solution, but until then- transplants are the gold standard- proven to provide long-term results, something Dr. Epstein has seen in his 25 years of performing these procedures.
Techniques
Two techniques can be used for a hair transplant procedure: follicular unit extraction FUE, and follicular unit transplantation or FUT. FUE is nearly universally the technique of choice for men, explaining why over 95% of the procedures performed at the Foundation are FUE. Dr. Epstein is considered one of the world’s experts in FUE, not only for technique but all-important for aesthetics, able to create natural appearing hairlines with the highest rates of hair regrowth, all while minimizing donor site scarring.
Performed properly, regrowth rates with FUE are as high if not higher than with FUT, and FUE leaves no linear scar in the donor area.
Ultimately, male hair Restoration Surgery is approached by Dr. Epstein as a real aesthetic surgery, not delegating the procedure to others where the aesthetic eye of the surgeon is truly invaluable.

Male Hair Transplant Candidates
Male pattern baldness candidate
Hair transplants are most commonly performed for individuals with male pattern baldness, and in fact, is the most frequent plastic surgery procedure performed on men. It can restore density to or lower a thinning hairline, build up temporal points, and fill in diffuse areas of thinning, and repair the less than aesthetic results of prior hair transplant procedures. Individuals with thin or missing eyebrows, mustaches, or beards, as well as those with hair loss due to scars from trauma or prior FUT strip hair transplant surgeries are are also appropriate candidates.
Reasonably good health and realistic expectations are important, which will be provided by Dr. Epstein so you will understand what to expect.
Candidates age
The procedure can be safely performed on individuals from the mid to early 20s to the late 70s and beyond. Of course, each case is evaluated by the doctor for appropriateness, along with the providing of alternative or combined therapies. In the occasional case, Dr. Epstein will advise the patient to receive clearance from his internist or cardiologist, and if indicated the procedure can be performed under the supervision of an anesthetist who can monitor the patient as well as administer twilight sedation if desired.

Hair Transplant Recovery in Men
There is little downtime after hair restoration surgery. Most patients are able to return to work and other normal activities within just one or two days. Exercise can be resumed on the sixth day. Tiny crusts are at the site of each graft that falls off by seven to eight days. The transplanted hairs typically fall out by two to three weeks, then start to regrow at four months. As the hair continues to grow, it will gradually become thicker and longer. Depending on the patient’s goals, occasionally a second procedure is desired to achieve more coverage, which can be performed as soon as 10 months later.
Photos show the donor area immediately after the procedure and one week later. By three days, the area is completely healed up, with all the dots no longer visible, and by one week the hairs that were shaved have started to regrow.
