Traveling Questions

Traveling to the Miami Hair Clinic

Over 70% of our patients travel to one of our nationwide office from outside the area and, in many instances, outside the county. Our patients come from throughout the U.S. and North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, and throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The hair transplant procedure is ideally suited to be performed on a fly-in/fly-out basis. An overnight stay in a local hotel is recommended after the procedure; however, the patient may fly the same day. The patient’s hair is washed in the office the first day, and the sutures our surgeons use for most cases are absorbable, meaning they do not need to be removed.

Traveling FAQs

What about follow-up? Isn’t it more difficult to be so far away after the procedure has been done?

Post procedure follow-up is just as effective even when the patient is outside of the area where the procedure is performed. Our surgeons use absorbable sutures for most patients, so that they do not need to be removed. After that, the same steps are taken by out-of-state patients as those taken by local patients. There is no disadvantage to being outside of the area.

Does flying have a negative impact on the procedure?

No, there is no negative impact from flying after your procedure.

Do your surgeons have a lot of experience with patients traveling for their procedure?

Yes. Our surgeons have been performing hair transplants on many patients who have flown in for procedures. In fact, approximately 70% of our patients fly in from other states and other countries. The hair transplant procedure is ideally suited for being performed on a fly in/fly out basis, with an extremely low incidence rate of complications and very easy post-procedure care. We are always available to assist patients with any concerns or questions they may have after the procedure.

I don’t know anything about the area where I will have my procedure done. Can you help plan my trip?

Absolutely. Our staff can assist you with all your travel arrangements and would be happy to help put together a travel itinerary based on your needs. Contact us to discuss your travel needs.

Is it possible to coincide traveling for my procedure with a vacation or time off with my family?

Yes, it is. As a general rule, you should plan to dedicate one full day to the procedure, including time to rest afterward. On the first day, your hair will be washed, and you won’t need to return to the office. By the second day, you may experience slight to moderate tenderness, but you’ll feel well enough to spend time with family and enjoy light activities.

If your procedure takes place at our Florida location, it’s especially important to protect your head from the sun. Wearing a hat is strongly recommended if you plan to be outdoors, though most activities can safely resume the following day.

Many of our patients have even turned their recovery into a mini-vacation. For example, one patient, J.K., traveled from Puerto Rico for the procedure and was able to relax while visiting family. As J.K. shared, “Only the first day was a little hectic. After that, everything was back to usual. Since I was always wearing a hat before the surgery anyway, wearing one afterward wasn’t even a big deal.”

Is it possible to be active and do things without a hat after the surgery?

Yes, it is possible to enjoy your time in South Florida where you elect to have the procedure done, without a hat after surgery. Our surgeons recommend Toppik for coverage of the area that has been transplanted, and patients have had tremendous success with it.

According to one patient, R.B., the time right after the procedure isn’t nearly as different as he would have expected. “In fact,” R.B. said, “I went to dinner with my friends the night of the procedure.” He added, “this was pretty nerve-racking since I didn’t want anyone to know I had gotten hair transplants, and I wasn’t sure about it, but after putting on the Toppik Dr. J. Epstein gave me, it was pretty much impossible to tell. I spent a week after the procedure in Coconut Grove and had a great time.”

Do I need to bring someone with me if I travel for the procedure?

It is always nice to have someone with you, but it is not necessary. There are several hotel accommodations within minutes of our location, and transportation is easily arranged by our office if you wish.

What happens after the surgery? What is the recovery time?

Usually, the total procedure time is 3 to 5 hours. After that, you may be somewhat drowsy and a few hours of recovery time is helpful. You can either return to your hotel after the surgery, or stay in one of our recovery rooms for a few hours, where you can relax and enjoy some lunch or dinner.
